Avgolemono Soup (Greek Egg & Lemon Chicken Soup)

20181004_202659rexdfI am home with a sick kid today.  I want him nowhere near me because I hate getting sick (does anyone like it?).  On the other hand, there’s that whole motherly love thing that drives me to want to take care of him.  Is there any better cure-all than chicken soup?  I think not.

Winter Spinach Salad

20180115_162453Sometimes in winter I’ll have the foolish notion that I miss summer.  And why not?  Days filled with eating warm, summer fruit right off the tree, swimming in the pool with the kids, harvesting fresh tomatoes and peppers.  Then I remember the week long stretches of 110+ F heat.  Oh yeah, that’s why I don’t miss summer.

Balsamic Vinaigrette

20180115_164323Okay, say the following in the voice of an upset three year old: I can do it myself!  This was (still is?) me throughout much of my life.  I would say ask my mom, but please don’t.  She’ll be a little too happy to share stories.

Greek Lamb Stew

20180109_1852kldfTraditionally in Greece, lamb is more of a spring-time thing.  But with the invention of these nifty things called refrigerators, freezers, and mass world wide transit, things like lamb are available year round.  Good for me, because lamb is one of my favorites. Greek-Style Roasted Winter Vegetables

20171226_140544_001Those shiny, round, and bright red tomatoes at the store are lying to you.  As you pass by them they whisper to you about how good they will be.  Don’t fall for their tricks.  You know that they will be dry and flavorless, because it’s not the right season. No-Fuss French Onion Soup

Kudos to the French for making great food, but seriously, sometimes I have to wonder if all the fuss is really worth it.  I really, really, really love French Onion Soup, but I really, really, really am short of time most days.

Rosemary & Garlic Roasted Nuts

20171226_141107Only a few things keep me from entertaining as often as I would like: time, energy, and that three week old pile of laundry in the family room (which maybe just might be related to that time and energy thing, just maybe). Continue reading Rosemary & Garlic Roasted Nuts

Split Pea and Lentil Soup

20181222_102316They are humble, plain, and sometimes less-than-attractive when cooked, but humans have been cultivating and consuming legumes for thousands of years.  In fact peas and lentils have been used in Greek cooking since ancient times.  You don’t get a much better example of “withstanding the tests of time” than that.

Cream of Mushroom Soup

20181223_144112I hate mushrooms.  Absolutely detest them.  My parents love them, so of course they were put into whatever meal they could be.  I would pretend to chew them, and then spit them into my napkin as I pretended to wipe my mouth.  Yes, I was that kid.

Farro Wheat Cereal

20171118_110454Breakfast in Greece can be a very rustic meal wih cheese pies, olives and feta, and crusty bread with honey or marmalade, to fare more familiar to the American palette like scrambled eggs and omelets.  Whatever it is, it will be tasty and reflective of what is available from the local area.  This includes a variety of grains that can be cooked up and served as a wholesome hot cereal.
