It is amazing how many tasty treats can be made with things most of us would just toss away. That they were made in the first place tells us that the genius behind them was a frugal person not wanting to waste what could be otherwise useful.
Meringues
Meringues may not be a Greek invention, but ask any Greek if they really care. Hint: they don’t.
Greek Kumquat “Spoon Sweet”
If there is ever a global shortage on sugar or honey, I’m not sure what most Greeks are going to do. Greeks really love their sweets.
Rizogalo (Greek Rice Pudding)
Most rizogalo recipes will have the same ingredients and the same really long cooking time. Be a rebel and follow me. Why, you may ask? Because the stuff tastes amazing, that’s why.
Kourambiethes (Greek Almond Shortbread)
These treats need to come with a hefty warning. Don’t breathe in, don’t breathe out, don’t laugh, snort, cough, sneeze, or do anything else similar while eating them. Oh yeah, and don’t wear black.
Milopita (Apple Cake)
I think the best thing about milopita is the fact that Greeks eat this for breakfast. Seriously, why wait till the end of the day for something this good?! I think they might be on to something, here.
Greek Sour Cherry Brandy
There are a few things that can be used to preserve food: salt, sugar, and dehydration. And booze. Ohhh yeah.
Paximathia (Greek Biscotti)
Every Greek woman I know has their own version of this Greek staple, so why should I be any different?? And every one of us thinks our own is the best, and of course we’re all correct. Of course.
Greek Plum Cake
We grow three varieties of plums in our yard. Needless to say, when we have a good year we are swimming in plums. This was a good year.
